EMT start a revolution in British first aid training

EMT, a specialist Welsh training company have been successful in lobbying for a change in the training approach for first aid in the UK. Approximately 40,000 people suffer sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital each year. UK survival rates are about 7% compared to up to 25% in other developed countries. Improving access to training will help this improve. All businesses must have first aiders by law and until now access to the training has been far more difficult than it should be due to entirely arbitary rules about how long it should take to train them. EMT are pleased to announce that due to their persistance, blended learning is now allowed which reduce the burden of training costs and time for all parties. It took over 3 years to overcome the often irrational resistance and powerful lobbying against by the first aid industry.

In Partnership with Pearson Work Based Learning, the UK’s leading educational Awarding Organisation, Emergency Medical Training ltd (EMT), a South Wales based first aid training provider, has pioneered a new training package which will dramatically cut the amount of time away from work for first aid training, a statutory requirement for UK businesses.

Learners will undertake online training – which can be carried out in sections in the workplace - followed by a practical assessment face to face with an experienced tutor. Until 11th April 2016, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had refused to recognise blended learning in this area. On that date, HSE stated that it now recognised blended learning.

The firm - whose team includes a former front line paramedic who’s attended around 17,000 999 calls - says the new delivery model will be more efficient, cost-effective and offer a more rigorous method of assessment. They state their intention is to drive up standards and reduce the cost of compliance.

EMT Development Director, Rob Thomas, said: "In a nutshell, our new service model raises quality by ensuring that both theoretical knowledge and practical skills are assessed far more rigorously than the current model. Backed by Pearson we can assure learners that the qualification they will gain is fully recognised within the UK and internationally. We have been battling hard to get this delivery method accepted and are grateful to the HSE for their patience. There have been some very powerful industry lobby groups against this change but thankfully common sense and the concern for learners has prevailed over commerical interests. We are also very grateful to Leighton Andrews for supporting us when he was Education Minister along with his colleagues in Welsh Government.

”The delivery model also offers businesses substantial savings  as it reduces the time away from work by up to 66 per cent for staff undergoing training.

Notes to editors etc.

1.     All businesses regardless of size must make adequate first aid arrangements for their staff. Approximately 3 million people per year are trained in first aid in the UK. 2.     This is a large market and Mintel estimate 21% of all UK adults are trained in first aid or hold a valid certificate (http://goo.gl/d2SGI4). In 2011 there were 26395600 UK citizens aged between 20 and 64 (O.N.S)

3.     The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with less than five employees and to the self-employed.

4.     First aid training has for many years been delivered solely in a classroom environment with a specified minimum instructor led time period i.e.

6 hours for an Emergency First Aid at Work course

18 hours for a First Aid at Work course

12 hours for a requalification in First Aid at Work

6 hours for requalification in Emergency First Aid at Work.

Requalification takes place every three years for people previously trained in first aid (within the three year period).

5.     The cost of compliance associated with this training requirement (which is statutory) comprises the direct cost of training and the indirect costs upon business organisations of releasing staff to undertake this.
